Even in the 26th Century, a trip to an exotic location is a good way to celebrate a university graduation. But, if Princess Tanjelia Dracon (known as “Tani”) the youngest daughter of the former Lariah Daniels and the Dracon High Princes of Jasan, had planned that kind of vacation, she would almost certainly have left out abduction, pursuit by killer cybernetic clones, and having as her destination the desolate, nearly lifeless mining world of Garza. On the other hand, given a choice, she might very well have included in her plans the well-sculpted, powerfully charismatic, and swoon-makingly sexy Ghanzorig “Steel” Khaan, king of Garza’s people, the Khun.
And, although it’s true that people generally like to keep busy on their vacations, it’s a good bet that Tani would have picked sharpening her already deadly martial arts skills over struggling to save the Khun from extinction caused by exploitation by evil liquid metal miners, using her new-found healing skills to provide them with much needed medical care, teaching the art of war to their men and women, and joining their fight for freedom.
Romance, on the other hand, is always welcome. Tani and Steel have a chance for just that, if only their tempers don’t get in the way, and if only a new-found force inside Tani that threatens to erupt dangerously every time she gets angry doesn’t destroy her efforts to help the Khun, and her chance at love. Surprises, too, are generally good things on this kind of journey, and there are plenty in store for Tani, as she finds that her special gifts and her shifter Dracon heritage may be the magical key to unlocking Garza’s ancient secret, saving its people, and giving their world a rebirth of hope and freedom.
Tani’s Destiny is the newest addition to Laura Jo Phillips’ “Hearts of Icarus” series, a continuation of the story begun in the “Soul Linked Saga.” While it is a departure from the reverse harem relationship's usually found in her books (and to which she returns in later books in this series), this story is still told the way Laura Jo’s fans expect and love, with plenty of romance, adventure, danger, emotional highs and lows, and—as always—plenty of spicy sensuality and eroticism to heat things up. It is a full-length 107,700 word novel, the second in the “Hearts of Icarus” series, set in the Thousand Worlds.

Princess Tani is about to graduate and return home to planet Jasan, when she is rendered unconscious during a kidnapping attempt. Upon awakening, Tani finds out that she is aboard a spaceship and on her way to Garza, a mining world that is barren and almost lifeless. The King of the Garza people is Steel Khaan, but he is the king of a people that is being held hostage and killed daily by outsiders who are extracting the ore from the mines. On arrival, Tani is swept into the rebellion. With her medical and warfare skills, it is up to Tani to help lead the people of Garza to freedom and to get them assistance from her parents, Lariah and the Dracon High Princes (from Book 1 of the Soul-Linked Saga series). Tani has always felt different from the rest of her family, and now she has an opportunity to figure out why and find her own destiny.

I have championed Laura Jo Phillips' books from the very first. Her Thousand World books are unique, with excellent writing, deep world building, and great attention to detail. This is the first book of hers that I have had to literally force myself to finish. The heroine, Tani, is a pompous know-it-all, who stands around and instructs everyone around her and dazzles them with her immense knowledge. What's worse is their reaction to her - they are by turns, amazed, worshiping, apologetic and subservient. The hero, Steel, isn't much better. He is what's commonly known as an emotional abuser. He is an angry man, who constantly says bitter and hateful things to the heroine, but fear not, he can grovel really well. Each time he did this through the story, I waited for her to say, "Ok. We are DONE!", but instead Tani always forgave him and pompously instructed him on how to treat her and how things should go in their relationship. Everything would be fine between them - until the next time. In the past, author Phillips came very close to this type of heroine in some of her Soul Linked books, but she always pulled it back in time, and also showed a give and take between the heroine and the people she was talking to. In this book that didn't happen, and we were left with a heroine who was unlikable and a hero who was contemptible. Naturally I will continue to purchase Ms. Phillips' books. With the exception of this one, her Thousand World books are all five and four star reads.

Tani Destiny Hearts of ICARUS Book 2 eBook Laura Jo Phillips Reviews

I am so disappointed in this book. I loved all other books this author wrote so I gave it a chance despite another bad review I read. The characters in this book were weak and annoying. The main character was portrayed as a know it all that spent much of the duration telling everyone what to do. I never reached the end as I got tired of her character.
Couldn't put down the book. Absolutely FANTASTIC and can't wait for the next one. I do love the stories Laura writes about the Thousand Worlds, and I'm pretty sure the next generation will be stuck with another species of bad guys like the first batch had to. I read Tani's Destiny in a couple of hours and found it to be absolutely riveting.
This new series is a very good read. It provides an ongoing perspective of the Jasani families which we have grown to love. It was great to catch up with both Nica in Book 1 and Tani as adults and their new found loves and lives away from their families. Looking forward to more stories about the now adult Jasani kids.
This book remained me of why I loved this series. I enjoyed how strong Tani was. I didn't enjoy Steele as much because of his thought processes. I do wish there was more interaction with the enemy. Who they are, why they worked with the Xanti. I would like to see how they rebuilt their world and some of the security measures taken. The romance was there as well as steamy scenes. Also the secondary characters could had more depth. Overall it was a great story.
Another very good book by LJP. I had a hard time putting this book down. I loved how we got to read about a child of Lariah since I fell in love with her in the first story. At times I questioned whether a race of people can be that ignorant and I guess they can. And holy cow is that one strong leading lady!! As with all her other books I'll eagerly look forward to the next.
I love Laura Jo Phillips and all of the soul linked saga books. When I first started this new series I was very saddened and shocked by Nica's story but still enjoyed the introduction of new types of characters and places, especially anything to do with the stuff fairytales are made of. I absolutely LOVED Tani's story and actually found it to be enjoyable even with the fact that she has only one destined soul mate instead of Rami. I felt that this story was very fast pace and extremely enjoyable to read. I cannot WAIT for more Clan Jasani books to come out! The three men and their woman and the relationship between them are certainly my absolute favorite parts of her books. Please keep writing!!
I've read all of Ms. Phillips' books, and LOVED them....except for this one. I was very excited to read it, more so when I learned the leading lady was one of Lariah's girls. However, I found Tani's character to be a bit of a know-it-all, which was a bit of a turn-off, for me. I didn't feel her "strength"....only her acceptance of her supiority over all of the other characters in the book, along with (what felt like) a false and sometimes condescending sense of humility when everyone else issued constant apologies to her for not taking every statement she made as an absolute truth. In turn, this made all of the other characters (including the hero) seem ignorant and weak. Normally, I can't put a Laura Jo Phillips book down....sadly, for this one, I had to force myself to finish it. I'm hoping for a return to the more relatable, believable characters and story-telling that I know Ms. Phillips is awesome at creating in her next book.
