“Dinosaur Toby” has cute pictures, but the story is weak. The story would ordinarily fall within the genre that Blake Snyder terms Golden Fleece and other authors usually call Road Trip, but it ignores the dramatic conventions. The characters Toby meets are given various roles as (antagonist, sidekick, etc.) somewhat randomly without any rhyme or reason. Toby escapes peril through dramatically unsatisfying deus ex machina plot twists. The story offers no moral and the chaotic dramatic structure wouldn’t support any that one might try to impose.Children’s cartoons take great liberties with assigning characters anthropomorphic qualities. Here dinosaurs (terrible lizards) are given strong maternal instincts and family bonds, which seem at quite at odds with known reptilian behavior. My five-year-old son seems quite convinced that some dinosaurs are friendly and would actually make good pets – which is the result of numerous inputs, not simply this book. I’m reminded of a Peanuts cartoon in which Lucy shares various misconceptions with Linus or somebody and Charlie Brown comments the child will need to go to school twice as long to unlearn all Lucy taught him.
Children’s stories should inspire their imagination and curiosity. Most stories are morality tales. I don’t object to giving cartoon characters human qualities in order to tell a story, but here the misimpressions do not effectively serve a dramatic purpose.
Also, the vocabulary is too advanced for the target audience.
However, the drawings are cute.

Dinosaur Toby Finding Mommy Just for Kids Elijah Kravets 9781520234106 Books Reviews
My sun love this book! Thans.
The story was simple but it had a good message that your world is what you make it by your attitude.
I like how the story emphasizes the importance of family, as well as the many helping hands in the world that surround us. This book could be a great discussion starter for parents and children.
The illustrations were good, bright, and colorful. The were a few that teetered on amateurish, though. The story was too long for this age group and rambled on in a disconnected manner. A lot of the sentences were clumsy to read. And FYI... pterodactyls are not birds.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me of all the stories my own sons composed at this age. Elijah is very creative. His baby dinosaur is adorable. The reader really wants him to to find his mommy. I recommend this book to all parents. Share it with your young ones and let them know about the young author. Let Elijah's fun tale spark the desire to create in your children.
I am giving this book a four star review, but I have some doubts. First let me say the story is cute and has fun illustrations as Toby. a dinosaur, gets lost and tries to find his way back to family.. A child is listed as the author, either 4 or 7 years old. I hope this is not a gimmick to sell books by others. I do believe the child must be involved, but would have liked the story to be one he actually wrote himself. I would love that, and any mistakes could be forgiven and even add to the charm of the book. If the authors would like to comment on who wrote the book and even if this is a collaboration between parents and child, I would love to know.
I would rate this book three and a half stars. An earlier reviewer noted that the book needed editing. An editorial comment says that all mistakes have been corrected, but there are still shifts in narration and some awkward sentences.
On the other hand, Toby is an adorable baby dinosaur who gets kidnapped by a bird of prey on his very first day of existence. Readers have to empathize with his plight. Toby meets various animals along his journey, a T Rex, fishes, snakes, possums and butterflies. Some of these are friends who try to help, others want to ensnare him. Toby manages to survive. At the end of the book, he realizes there is nothing more valuable than family.
Targeted for preschoolers and primary school age children, young dinosaur lovers will identify with the intrepid Toby. The illustrations are simple, but bright and bold. Good choice for a quick bedtime story or read aloud.
