Across the Fruited Plain edition by Florence Crannell Means Janet Smalley Literature Fiction eBooks
Although this story is technically for children, it's truly a wonderful, eye-opening read for people of all ages...When the story opens, Rose-Ellen, her brothers Dick and Jimmie, baby sister Sally, widowed unemployed dad and grandparents are poor yet still managing to get by in their Philadelphia home. Yet before long, they learn that Grandpa will be losing the store he's owned for decades, and they just don't know how they will keep the family home.
The Beechams' neighbor Mrs. Albi tells about their family having gone to New Jersey to pick cranberries. Although dubious at first, the Beechams soon decide this is the best immediate plan of action for their family. So they put their belongings into storage and set off, filled with high spirits hoping for the best.
Although it's hard work, involving the entire family, the Beechams make the best of their time. But before long, cranberry season is over, and it's time to find a new crop. Thus they follow the other migrant workers to another crop in another state, and to another, and another.
The family soon wonders, when will it end? Never do they have enough money for more than basic food and the barest of shelter. The children aren't being educated. Is it all just an endless cycle? Why doesn't anyone care?
Despite the Beechams being fiction, there were many, many families just like them during the '30s. It's heartbreaking to think of children like these, suffering right along with the adults.
