In 1849, a boy saves a girl from the Hudson River in this story “of wonders and sweetness, magic and horrors [that] immerses itself in the marvelous” (The Boston Sunday Globe).

A penniless Irish orphan, Daniel Quinn is among the crowds gathered at the Hudson River in Albany to watch a legendary dancer aboard the ferry. But when the boat strikes the ice that chokes the water on this wintry day, awe turns to terror. Though the dancer’s life is lost, Daniel risks his neck and rescues her niece, Maud Fallon.

But just as he’s falling in love with the beautiful, passionate girl, she’s snatched away from him. As the years pass and Daniel continues his quest for the beguiling Maud, he will witness the rise and fall of great dynasties in upstate New York, epochal prize fights, the exotic world of the theater, visitations from spirits beyond the grave, horrific battles between Irish immigrants and the Know-Nothings, the New York draft riots, the perils of the Underground Railroad, and the bloody despair of the Civil War.

Rich with nineteenth-century history and filled with flourishes of humor and magical realism, this is an “engrossing and eerily profound” novel (Time) from an author who, in the words of Stephen King, “writes with verve and nerve [and] paints a full and lively canvas.” In the tradition of E. L. Doctorow’s Billy Bathgate or Mark Helprin’s Winter’s Tale, it is a remarkable saga from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Ironweed.

Quinn's Book A Novel - edition by William Kennedy. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

I have read all of William Kennedy's books. I admit to being from Albany, the subject of his books. Kennedy unravels the tales of one of the nation's great "open" towns in the U.S.
They are history on a more personal level. It will not ast long on the night table.
Can't believe a pulitzer winner wrote this!!
Draggy
I have long followed William Kennedy's fictional lineage of an Irish family in Albany. This book keeps the series' sense of reality, including the grittiness and politics of the American Irish heritage, in the latest incarnation of the family's early history. Well worth the read even if you haven't read the others.
Kennedy is a master story teller. His use of language is both intelligent and fun. There are both elements of historical fiction and the tall-tale in the novel. Kennedy makes us sympathetic with his "Huck Finn" main character, which isn't always achieved by late 20th century authors, while avoiding sentimentality.
I rarely give a book a 5-star rating. However, Quinn's Book A Novel is beyond an enjoyable, well written novel. It is well researched historical fiction whose presentation showcases the human suffering of the time. It also contains elements of the magical realism of great Hispanic writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Luis Alberto Urrea. It is infused with humor, beautifully written and contains very few of the printing errors that are so common in today's books. It was no surprise to me when I read at the end of my version that William Kennedy has won numerous awards for his fiction, vincluding a Pulitzer Prize in 1984.
William Kennedy is a brilliant writer, and I can only wish he were more productive. Rather than provide you with a synopsis of the plot, let me just say the characters and story are sublime. Well worth your time.
“But I did begin to see that violence was the norm of this bellicose world.” ( Locations 711-712).

Liked it. Didn’t love it. Time, place and characters all engaging; none compelling. My favorite passage ( Locations 3375-3460) was Quinn’s speech sharing the war’s reality of the Civil War—when it wasn’t the popular or patriotic thing to do.

Recommendation Of some historical significance. Worth reading.

“…where lay a generation of blasted sons seven thousand dead in a single battle, dead in a great wedge of slaughter, their brains and bowels blown out of them, and they then left to rot on a field consecrated by national treachery and endemic madness. And the killing moved on to greener pastures.” ( Locations 2807-2809).
