May Sarton discovers the liberation of old age in this life-affirming journal
On the second day of her 80th year, May Sarton began a new journal. She wrote it because she wanted “to go on a little while longer;” to discover “what is really happening to me.”
This triumphant sequel to Endgame—Sarton’s journal of her 79th year—is filled with the comforting minutiae of daily life, from gardening to planning dinners and floral arrangements to answering fan mail. The wonderful thing about getting older, Sarton writes, is “the freedom to be absurd, the freedom to forget things . . . the freedom to be eccentric.” Her other octogenarian pleasures include preparing for holidays and weddings, lunches with old friends and new admirers, the heady delight of critical recognition, and the rebirth of her lyric voice as she creates new poems. Yet Sarton knows that age can also bring pain and ill health, as well as a deepening awareness of the “perilousness of life on all sides, knowing that at any moment something frightful may happen.”

I always feel at home in May Sarton's house. Yes, I feel as though I'm visiting her and enjoying her garden, her animals, and the good food she cooks or has cooked for her. I feel her aches and pains and the pressure and stress she experiences from keeping up with all her writing especially her correspondence. I enjoy it when she escapes from the confines of her house and enjoys doing a poetry reading or just having a meal with friends. I like hearing about what makes her lose her temper or burst into tears. I'm interested to hear about how she copes with the deterioration of her vocal powers. I'm truly amazed by how much she can accomplish in a day at 79 and 80 even though she has health problems. May is always good company, and I'm so glad that as I approach 70 that I can enjoy reading about a famous poet's adventures. Although I'm not a big fan of poetry, I may even get curious enough to try her poetry. So happy that she had so many friends and helpers to visit her. What a sweet, lovely lady!Product details

Encore A Journal of the Eightieth Year eBook May Sarton Reviews
Good book from what I have been told, but I didn't buy it for myself. Arrived before expected in excellent condition. Packaged well. I would recommend the seller.
love it
I love her writing.
I love ALL May Sarton's work. I purchased this book used and the vendor was great. Wonderful customer service, timely and as promised.
The author's focus on all the inspirational elements in her life brings out the beauty in her surround of friends - human, floral, and feline. How fortunate that she had all that!
It is possible to become tired of Sarton's introspective navel-gazing. She's all about herself, as indeed she always was.
Very intriguing narration of a year in May Sarton's life. Some of the references to names of people in her life are not explained, as they were identified in previous books. This made it difficult to fill in some of the blanks, since I'm sure that knowing who they were in her life would have helped the reader. Her credentials include teaching at some prestigious Ivy League colleges in New England, and her writing clearly shows a wonderful way with words. Although rich in details about which plants are in her garden and what types of arrangements were brought to her as gifts, there is nothing mentioned about any intimate relationships. Her life as she lived it in this one year included a lot of health problems, and it was her attitude about those problems that exemplified her overall attitude. Her outlook on life is both realistic and inspiring. Makes me want to go back and read some of her older works.
